Organização Mundial de Turismo

Wine tourism represents an excellent opportunity for destinations to diversify and improve their tourism value chains, promote rural development and revitalize areas that can be affected by depopulation and social exclusion. The Conference will look at policies, innovation, destination management, sustainability and the exit from the COVID-19 crisis with practical and inspiring examples. Held under the theme "Wine Tourism – a driver for rural development’, the conference will focus on the contribution of wine tourism to regional socio-economic integration and its great potential to generate development opportunities in rural destinations.

Building on UNWTO's work to position tourism at the center of recovery plans, the conference presents a unique opportunity for experts from an increasingly growing wine tourism sector to work together to find concrete solutions to rebuild and make tourism a fundamental tool for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future for rural communities. As the event begins, Portugal, this year's host, will lead us through a tasting experience of its seven wine regions, while the last day of the Conference will offer immersive wine tourism experiences in different Alentejo vineyards. In this region, the force of the earth marks time and cities like Elvas and Évora, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO, stand as evidence of the value of its people.

We look forward to having you with us in Alentejo or joining us online.

Zurab Pololikashvili
Secretary-General, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)

Wine Tourism, in particular, represents an opportunity for growth, development and positioning of the country’s unique assets, encouraging a longer average stay in lower-density territories and sustaining the tourism activity during the year, contributing to an increasingly diversification of external markets.

Wine Pairs with Portugal because of an increasingly dynamic sector with new products and activities being created, along with a capability to attract tourists and provide rich, diversified, and memorable experiences, connecting landscape, gastronomy, art and literature (just to name a few). It should also not be unnoticed the UNESCO Classification as World Heritage Sites of the Alto Douro Wine Region and the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture.

Accordingly, we are proud to welcome the Fifth Global Conference on Wine Tourism, in partnership with the World Tourism Organization, held under the theme “Wine Tourism – a driver for rural development” reaffirming our purpose to accomplish a future where tourism incorporates the objectives for sustainable development, in line with our bold ambition to become the most sustainable destination in the world. It’s Time To Be. Welcome to Portugal.

Welcome to one of the richest wine regions in Portugal!

It is, for me, an honor to be able to host the 5th UNWTO Global Conference on Wine Tourism, under the aegis of the World Tourism Organization and the Government of Portugal.

Reguengos de Monsaraz, in Alentejo, is a territory experienced and felt by Man for 9,000 years. We are valued for a unique intangible heritage, hospitable people, high quality wines that are part of our identity and an excellent wine tourism sector that allows unforgettable experiences.

I hope that the moments you will live here may remain in your memory and that you take Reguengos de Monsaraz, Alentejo and Portugal in your hear.

Mayor of Reguengos de Monsaraz
